A new Network Centre of Excellence (NCE) recently awarded by the federal government to 50 researchers at 19 universities across Canada, will be headquartered at the Centre for Digital Media, Great Northern Way Campus (GNWC).

New media issues and opportunities and a better understanding of brain development in children are the subjects of two new Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) valued at more than $42 million over five years and to be hosted by the University of British Columbia.

GRAND was announced today: the Graphics, Animation and New Media NCE (Network of Centers of Excellence). This is a national network of scholars in Computer Science, the Social Sciences and Humanities, put together by the redoubtable Kelly Booth over the past year.

The new Network Centre of Excellence (NCE) in Graphics, Animation, and New meDia (GRAND) which recently received $23 million in funding from the federal government will be co-led by Dr. Abby Goodrum, Associate Dean, Scholarly Research and Creative activities in Ryerson Universitys Faculty of Communication & Design (FCAD), and the Velma Rogers Graham Research Chair in News, Media, and Technology. Investigators in the GRAND NCE share a common goal of advancing Canada's global leadership position in new media, animation and games.

Autodesk's Director of Research, Dr. Gordon Kurtenbach has been appointed as Chair of the research committee overseeing the Graphics, Animation and New meDia "GRAND" Network - a $23.2 million research initiative funded over five years as part of Canada's Centres of Excellence.
